Sac City Council approves solid waste fee increase

The Sacramento City Council Tuesday unanimously approved raising solid waste disposal fees by $3.83 a month for each of the next three years, largely to pay for a new state requirement that cities collect and compost food waste from customers.

Sacramento Climate Action Plan: draft ready for public review!

Sacramento County’s draft Communitywide Climate Action Plan (CAP), which addresses greenhouse gas reductions and climate change adaptation, is now available for public review.
An online workshop on the draft CAP will take place via Zoom at the Sacramento County Environmental Commission (SEC) meeting on Monday, March 15, at 6 p.m. The workshop will be an opportunity for the public and the SEC to provide feedback on the draft CAP.

Sort Smart! Recycling From Home in Our Region

With more people working from home and shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic, curbside recycling carts have never been fuller.
“Both the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County saw a 15 percent uptick in the amount of curbside recyclables collected in April,” said Erin Treadwell with the City of Sacramento Recycling and Solid Waste Division. “But often, what ends up in the bin doesn’t belong there.”
To reduce cart contamination, the City of Sacramento is partnering with the County of Sacramento and cities of Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Galt on an educational campaign to make sure curbside recyclables stay recyclable and out of the landfill.

Many plastic food and beverage containers can be placed in your curbside recycling cart. The County’s curbside recycling program accepts plastics #1 – #7, with the exception of Styrofoam…As long as the plastic item has a #1 – #7 stamped on it, usually on the bottom or side, and located within the “chasing arrows” symbol, it is ok to put in your recycling cart.

Plastic bags are a little different. Thin, stretchy plastic, like zip-lock bags, single-use grocery bags, bubble wrap and air pillows used for packaging, are not accepted in your curbside recycling cart. However, some local businesses do accept these items for recycling. Visit the Plastic Film Recycling website to find a nearby drop-off location. And, please remember: if you bag your recyclables, do not put the bag in the recycling cart. Empty the recyclables into your cart, reuse the bag, or toss it in the garbage cart.*
