Come learn what ECOS is all about! Attend our monthly orientation session on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 from 6:00 – 6:30pm via Zoom to get a broad overview of what ECOS does, why it matters and what you can do to help! This orientation can also help anyone wanting to learn more about environmental issues in the Sacramento region. We will cover our current goals that involve climate change prevention, promoting infill over sprawl development, transit, habitat protection and the wise use of water resources, among others.

Sutter’s Landing Regional Park Site Plan Update Survey

The City of Sacramento’s Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment Department would like to gather public input from our neighbors of Sutter’s Landing Regional Park. The survey information will be used to help the city develop a Site Plan Update and Guidebook for the development of the site.

The survey is open June 10 through July 12. This survey is estimated to take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Stockton Blvd Plan Events Oct 23 and 28

The Stockton Blvd Plan is a partnership between the City of Sacramento, community members, and organizations to transform Stockton Blvd into a thriving corridor that expands opportunities for, and supports the cultures of, existing residents and small businesses while accommodating growth and centering racial equity.

A community celebration with food and fun will be held on October 23. Attendees will have a chance to see what other community members said about the strategies that were gathered from the previous events and recent surveys (visit the Stockton Blvd Events page for more information). Other resources will be available to visitors.

Harvest Festival
Join us for food, raffle prizes, and a discussion about the future of Stockton Blvd. Along with English, we will also have materials and staff available for Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Spanish, Hmong, and Vietnamese speakers.

Transportation Expert Todd Litman – Aug 12, 6pm

Please join ECOS’ Transportation, Air Quality & Climate Change (TAQCC) Committee for its regular monthly meeting, on Thursday, August 12th. Details about joining this meeting using “Zoom” are provided below. Our featured speaker will be Todd Litman, transportation expert and Executive Director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute.

The City of Sacramento has begun work on its 2040 General Plan (including a Transportation Priorities Plan) which will be the City’s blueprint for how and where Sacramento will grow over the next 20 years. In parallel, the City will also be preparing a Climate Action Plan, a framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and establish Sacramento as a climate leader. Todd Litman will advise us how to influence these major planning efforts, to ensure that last year’s recommendations of the Mayors’ Commission on Climate Change (including those adopted by its Mobility Technical Advisory Committee) are fully implemented.

The balance of the meeting will be devoted to updates on other active issues, such as the County Climate Action Plan, Climate Emergency Declarations, the proposed expansion of the CapCity bridge over the American River, and other topics raised by attendees.

Development of the 2020 Urban Water Management Plan

On May 5, 2021, the Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS), the Sierra Club Sacramento Group and the League of Women Voters of Sacramento County submitted a joint letter to a number of local water agencies summarizing our comments on the current development of the 2020 Urban Water Management Plan. Below is the opening of our letter.

The development of the 2020 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP) including the Water Shortage Contingency Plan (WSCP) lacks a full, open, and meaningful public participation process. State law provides a minimum 14-day public notice prior to the adoption hearing. but in view of the fact that the U.S. Drought Monitor, a weekly hydrological analysis by the federal government, shows 93% of California in either “severe,” “extreme” or exceptional” drought, this suggests a public voice is more important now than ever.
Communities throughout the region are concerned about the availability of water for drinking, the environment and affordability issues. Climate change magnifies these concerns. The assumptions and projections documented in the Urban Water Management Plans, and the specific conservation and efficiency programs planned are of great interest to the community.
