Community Education – Tenants’ Rights and Food Stamps

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened many problems throughout our community and created a litany of new ones. It is important to show our most vulnerable brothers and sisters that they need not face these challenges alone.

Each year, the UC Davis School of Law organizes a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. With a reputation for public service and racial justice, the King Hall community is eager to help during this time of unprecedented crisis. On January 18th, students will work alongside LSNC to offer webinars & clinics through Zoom. The schedule consists of two LSNC-led webinars focusing on government benefits that provide vital aid to the Davis and Sacramento communities. Each webinar will be followed by a clinic led by students. These clinics will be conducted through Zoom break-out rooms so that individual questions may receive tailored answers. The Zoom links for each webinar & clinic are provided below. All times listed are in Pacific time.

The first webinar will begin at 10 a.m. and will provide instruction on how to apply for CalFresh. The second webinar will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will focus on eviction and tenant’s rights. The webinars are scheduled to last an hour and the student clinics will begin shortly after each webinar ends.

Councilmembers back call for community benefit ‘commitments’ on Aggie Square

Two Sacramento city councilmembers, Jay Schenirer and Eric Guerra, are backing a call to prevent gentrification near Aggie Square.
Aggie Square is the University of California Davis’ planned satellite campus in Sacramento. The $1.1 billion, 25-acre project would fill land the university owns near Stockton Boulevard and Broadway with over 1 million square feet of research, wet lab, commercial space and housing.

Sacramento City Council passes urban farm tax break ordinance

Now, there is another way people can make a little money — or at least, save a little money — by growing their own food. It comes in the form of a tax break being offered by the Sacramento City Council.

The council passed an ordinance Thursday that will give tax breaks of hundreds of dollars to people who turn vacant lots into urban farms.

The idea is to reduce blight and increase access to fresh produce in underserved communities.

In an effort to help implement the recently passed Sacramento City Urban Agriculture ordinance, the Sacramento Urban Agriculture Coalition is hosting a legal clinic for people currently practicing urban agriculture or would like more information about how to do it!

Law Bites: Legal Clinic and Workshop for Urban Agriculture in Sacramento

When: Tuesday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Where: Colonial Heights Branch Library, 4799 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95820

There will be lawyers on hand to answer questions people have on the following areas related to urban agriculture:

● Employment law: How do I hire someone to help? Do I have to pay interns? What’s an I-9?

● Tax and Government Benefit Impact: Do I need to pay charge sales tax to sell produce? Am I going to lose my SSI if I make money selling food?

● Choosing how you form: Do I have to form a business? What are the advantages? How can I be a nonprofit?

● A workshop to talk about the urban agriculture ordinance passed by the City. What did it change? What do you need to do to take advantage of it?
