ECOS’ Comments on the Delta Tunnels

This comment letter is not intended to be exhaustive as pertains the myriad of problems with the tunnels project now reborn as “California WaterFix,” but rather it is intended for us to officially go on the record opposing this project because of the enormous deleterious environmental impacts in our region, and because of the inadequate analysis in the RDEIR/SDEIS as well as the inadequate avoidance, mitigation and and minimization measures proposed to address those impacts.

Sacramento City Council passes urban farm tax break ordinance

Now, there is another way people can make a little money — or at least, save a little money — by growing their own food. It comes in the form of a tax break being offered by the Sacramento City Council.

The council passed an ordinance Thursday that will give tax breaks of hundreds of dollars to people who turn vacant lots into urban farms.

The idea is to reduce blight and increase access to fresh produce in underserved communities.

As West Nile season heats up, do does mosquito spraying

With the deadly West Nile virus season heating up, state and local health officials are again battling the disease with an unusual arsenal of tiny fish, dead birds and plump chickens.

That trio, part of a years-long, multipronged approach to squashing West Nile, helps health officials identify the mosquito “hot spots” that need ground or aerial spraying.

ECOS endorses campaign for a just Affordable Housing Ordinance

July 28, 2015

At our Board of Directors meeting last night, the Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS) voted to endorse the campaign currently led by ECOS member the Sacramento Housing Alliance, the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), Area Congregations Together (ACT) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1000 for a just affordable housing ordinance in the City of Sacramento. Sacramento’s Mixed-Income Housing ordinance is slated for changes, and has much plenty of room for improvement. Let’s work on a solution together! The city council will discuss the changes next on September 1st, 2015 at City Hall, 915 I Street.

Will you be at the last “public hearing” on Delta Tunnels?

Tuesday, July 28, is the last of two public hearings on the Delta tunnels project. Help us transform the open house.

Our goal: a video of how large we really are to share with the Secretary Jewell at the Department of the Interior and with President Obama. You can be provided with insightful questions to ask if you’d like or help you craft your own thoughts. Some spirited, yet respectful activities are being planned to transform their dull open house into a party to oppose the tunnels. Let’s win this thing once and for all! We need to pack the “public hearings” on the Delta Tunnels!!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday in Sacramento — that’s where we will be from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in downtown.. If you cannot make the July 28 date from 3:00p to 7:00p, there is a second public meeting on July 29 in Walnut Grove (see here).
