Ralph Propper and Eugene Lee, Co-Chairs of the ECOS Climate Change Committee, invite you to the 2nd Meeting of our EJ Speaker Series:

While many environmental justice (EJ) conversations focus on urban centers, rural communities face unique and often overlooked challenges. This talk will define the core principles of EJ and demonstrate how tools like CalEnviroScreen are used to identify disproportionate burdens in our region. By connecting these broader frameworks to local issues (specifically within agricultural communities) we will explore how data and community-led research can drive local action.

Dr. Alfonso A. Aranda is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Sacramento State and a scholar-activist dedicated to advancing environmental justice. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Davis, where his research focused on environmental health risks in farmworker and agricultural communities. As the son of farmworkers, Dr. Aranda is committed to bridging academia and community through participatory research. He leads the Knights Landing Environmental Health Project (KLEHP) and teaches courses on environmental health and justice, critical thinking, and science.

Join Sacramento Investment Without Displacement to learn more about the work we have done around Community Benefits Agreements (CBA) and how they have significantly impacted other cities.

SIWD has been working with City of Sacramento Staff to implement a CBA ordinance. We will also give an update on where we are in this process. We will also discuss how residents and community members can join us and provide feedback and information.

Sacramento County doesn’t postpone 2030 climate goal — for now

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday didn’t postpone a carbon neutrality goal after dozens of climate activists pushed back against proposed changes.

County staff had recommended the board change the goal from 2030 to no later than 2045 in order to match state plans, make the timeline more achievable and reduce the risk of lawsuits.

Instead of approving or rejecting the suggested update, the board asked staff to present another version of the climate emergency declaration in late September or early October. In a 3-1 vote, with Supervisor Sue Frost abstaining, the board requested revisions including adding a requirement to measure progress on reducing emissions every five years.

Sacramento County Climate Emergency Resolution Update – Outcome

On July 11, 2023, the Sacramento County Planning and Environmental Review staff presented a recommendation to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to amend the Climate Emergency Resolution to be consistent with the State’s 2045 carbon neutrality goal.
