Interviews of Candidates for Sacramento County Supervisor for District 1

Overview:
I thank the candidates for agreeing to do the interview. Running for office is a big undertaking, and they deserve our gratitude for taking the plunge!

These interviews are longer than the sound bites we get in the media world. I hope they will help you get to know the candidates and arouse your interest in our County Board of Supervisors. It has only five officials, and they have great power to shape our region.

My Message:
The environment is more than our rivers and trees, or our buildings and roads. It is our ideas and the people who represent them: our politicians. WE give them the power to take ideas and turn them into reality. Therefore, we need to learn what their ideas are. Because we care about the environment, choosing the right candidate is critical.

Sacramento County District 1 is large, covering 112 square miles – it includes most of the City of Sacramento, reaching south to Florin Road. It has been represented by Phil Serna since 2010. Whomever is elected will have great influence on the future growth of our county. Many new large housing developments are proposed for agricultural land in District 1, so key topics include reducing greenhouse gas emissions from traffic and buildings, protecting green spaces, and managing water. The interviews focus on these and other environmental issues.

Make Polluters Pay 8/26/2024

Rally at the Capitol to Make Polluters Pay!

We’re just days away from the California State Senate voting on three transformative bills to hold Big Oil accountable and protect communities from deadly oil and gas pollution. We have the momentum on our side, but we need a few more senators to vote yes for these crucial protections.

Sign up for the rally to show our legislators there is huge support for these protections.

Senators will be reviewing hundreds of bills in the final two weeks of the session – we need to capture their attention now and win their support. And, lobby groups for the oil industry have spent millions of dollars to try and sink these bills and protect Big Oil profits. One oil industry group may even be planning a demonstration next Monday at the Capitol as well.

  • Idle Well Clean-Up (AB 1866 – Hart): Forces oil companies to clean up their idle wells much faster.
  • Low-Producing Well Accountability Act (AB 2716 – Bryan): Fines oil companies operating in the Inglewood Oil Field $10,000/month for operating low-producing wells near communities.
  • Local Environmental Choice and Safety Act (AB 3233 – Addis): Protects local governments’ authority to restrict oil & gas production in their jurisdictions.

Sort Smart! Recycling From Home in Our Region

June 9, 2020

With more people working from home and shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic, curbside recycling carts have never been fuller.

“Both the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County saw a 15 percent uptick in the amount of curbside recyclables collected in April,” said Erin Treadwell with the City of Sacramento Recycling and Solid Waste Division. “But often, what ends up in the bin doesn’t belong there.”

To reduce cart contamination, the City of Sacramento is partnering with the County of Sacramento and cities of Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Galt on an educational campaign to make sure curbside recyclables stay recyclable and out of the landfill.

Unmet Transit Needs – Upcoming Meetings

Whether you ride daily, occasionally or haven’t tried transit yet, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments is looking for feedback on our area’s bus, dial-a-ride, paratransit and light rail transit services. SACOG accepts transit needs related comments from any area in the counties of Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.

What are your thoughts on local transit service? Would you like to use it for more trips, but don’t because of issues like where it goes, the schedule or cost? Are there places you really need to go but cannot currently? Please give SACOG your thoughts by attending an Unmet Transit Needs meeting or by relaying your comments to SACOG.

The California State Transportation Development Act (TDA) requires the Unmet Transit Needs Process be conducted annually by Regional Transportation Planning Agencies. SACOG is the Regional Transportation Planning Agency for the counties of Sacramento, Yuba, Sutter and Yolo. SACOG staff conducts the Unmet Transit Needs process annually for these four counties. The TDA requires that SACOG make a determination whether there are “unmet transit needs that are reasonable to meet” in the jurisdictions throughout the four counties.

There are also a number of ways to comment beyond the hearings, so please feel free to also call, text, email, fax or mail your unmet transit needs comments to SACOG!
