First Student Housing Transit Oriented Development Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

SacRT and the Martin Group held a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of the Wexler, a new student housing transit-oriented development (TOD) project located adjacent to SacRT’s University/65th Street Transit Center.

SacRT sold the property in November 2019, marking SacRT’s first TOD property sale and the first student housing TOD in the Sacramento region. The project also reconstructed the SacRT bus stops on 67th and Q Street to improve the connection to the light rail Station. SacRT received $2 million from the sale proceeds, to reinvest into the system.

Wexler is a 223 unit, 760+ bed student housing project with 7,450 square feet of ground floor retail. The property is located less than a block south of Sacramento State, adjacent to one of SacRT’s busiest transit centers and light rail stations, which is utilized by more than 40,000 light rail riders and 30,000 bus riders per month, and just steps away from nearby retail centers. The strategic, transit-oriented location affords residents easy connectivity to the surrounding Sacramento region.

In 2020, after the Mayors’ Commission on Climate Change released its recommendations to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, the Sacramento City Council directed staff to develop an ordinance for electrification of new construction and a strategy for existing building electrification, with a focus on under-resourced communities.

In July, under Jennifer Venema’s leadership, City staff released a draft Climate Action, and now a draft Adaptation Plan. A 2040 General Plan is expected this winter.

Central City Mobility Project Community Workshop 11/10

The City of Sacramento received funding through an SB1 competitive grant program, which will allow the City to rehabilitate the pavement, extend the protected bikeway network, and add circulation improvements to key corridors.

The project will convert 5th Street (X Street to H Street) from a one-way to a two-way street, and will add bike lanes in both directions.

The project will also extend the protected bikeway network, constructed in 2018, on:

9th Street (Q Street to L Street),
10th Street (Broadway to Q Street),
19th Street (H Street to Broadway),
21st Street (I Street to Broadway),
P Street (15th Street to 21st Street), and
Q Street (14th Street to 21st Street).

There will be a community meeting to update the community about the project on November 10th from 5:00-6:00pm at the Capitol Events Center on 1021 11th Street.

Vote No on Measure A – Watch Tim’s and Mike’s Video

Tim Irvine of Environmental Democrats of Sacramento County, and Mike McKeever, former CEO of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) react to a new flyer released about Measure A.

Measure A would cause sprawl development to surge by funding roadway capacity expansion projects (including a new expressway); this would prevent our region from meeting State and federal air quality and climate mandates — thereby making us ineligible for their transportation and housing funds. Measure A represents the opposite of the SACRAMENTO BLUEPRINT principles of affordable, transit-served infill development and natural resource protection, for which our region has received national acclaim. VOTE No on Measure A.

California Air Resources Board letter on Measure A

On October 10, 2022, the California Air Resources Board sent a letter to the Sacramento Transportation Authority regarding Measure A.

We write to share information regarding the impacts that several projects slated for funding under this measure, and the project portfolio as a whole, will have on climate change and air quality. As an oversight agency, including for the Senate Bill 375 program (Steinberg, Stats. 2008, ch. 728), and based on CARB staff’s analysis of the measure, we need to make you aware that if Measure A is approved, the region may face serious compliance challenges with State emissions reductions requirements.
