An ode to our native oaks

Out of all the wonderful trees that make up our urban forest in Sacramento, native oaks hold a special place in our hearts. Ask any staff member what their favorite tree is, and chances are many will mention the valley oak. Native plants are trending, and for good reason – they are so important to our natural ecosystems. But native trees, and native oaks in particular, carry the biggest impact.

This Oaktober, we’re celebrating the oaks that are native to the Sacramento region – the valley oak (Quercus lobata), blue oak (Quercus douglasii), and interior live oak (Quercus wislizeni). These majestic trees provide more benefits than any other tree that grows locally. Thanks to donors and volunteers like you, every year we plant 3,200 native trees throughout the region, both in reforestation sites and at places like homes, parks, and schools.

Sacramento County Climate Action Plan

On October 8, 2021, ECOS sent our comments on the Sacramento County Climate Action Plan, Final Draft dated September 2021.

Family Fall Festival Oct 17

at Stirling Park Drive & Rod Beaudry Drive near the entrance of River Bend Park, Sacramento

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2021 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Join residents from Rancho Cordova and surrounding areas for an afternoon touring this scenic and treasured area of our American River Parkway. Enjoy nature walks, arts & crafts, educational sessions, a Nature Quest, and live music. Attendees will learn about the surrounding area which is rich in history with Indian burial grounds, majestic old oak trees, our California Pony Express, the Alexander Leidesdorff Ranch, and an abundance of wildlife and critters. Stockton Blvd Plan Events Oct 23 and 28

The Stockton Blvd Plan is a partnership between the City of Sacramento, community members, and organizations to transform Stockton Blvd into a thriving corridor that expands opportunities for, and supports the cultures of, existing residents and small businesses while accommodating growth and centering racial equity.

October 23

A community celebration with food and fun will be held on October 23. Attendees will have a chance to see what other community members said about the strategies that were gathered from the previous events and recent surveys (visit the Stockton Blvd Events page for more information). Other resources will be available to visitors.

Harvest Festival
Join us for food, raffle prizes, and a discussion about the future of Stockton Blvd. Along with English, we will also have materials and staff available for Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Spanish, Hmong, and Vietnamese speakers.
