Preservation Sacramento Walking Tour: Affordable Housing in Historic Buildings, with Architectural Historian William Burg
Historic buildings provide valuable opportunities for reuse as affordable housing. This walking tour will focus on properties that are historic landmarks, contributors to historic districts, or additions to historic buildings that now function as affordable or mixed-income housing. In addition to the interesting stories and architectural styles of the buildings, tour attendees will learn about strategies and incentives used to facilitate and fund affordable housing in historic buildings.
Stops will include the Maydestone Apartments, the Ridgeway Apartments, Shasta Hotel, Capitol Park Hotel, Hotel Berry, Bel-Vue Apartments, and The Sawyer on the 700 block of K Street. Depending on availability, several of these sites may be open to those on the tour for an inside look.
Tour guide William Burg has over a decade of experience in research and rehabilitation of historic buildings, and has written seven books about Sacramento’s history.
Tour starts at The Maydestone, 1001 15th Street, and ends at Bailarin Cellars, 720 K Street. A guide map and full information on locations will be provided to registered attendees.
