Sacramento Splash is the main protector of the the fragile and exquisite vernal pools and the wide variety of flora and fauna that inhabit them adjacent to Mather Field. These jewels of the Sacramento region are under constant threat of destruction by area developers.
Splash’s mission includes the education of thousands of area school children concerning the phenomenon of vernal pools and the need to protect our natural environment.
As summer nears its end, the vernal pools of Mather Field remain barren and dry. Shells and exoskeletons lie scattered across cracked soils. Amphibians have dug deep into the earth and gone dormant. Resting seeds, eggs and cysts patiently await the rain to awaken. During the dry season it can feel like an endless sea of brown grass out in the preserve, but the practiced eye can identify subtle differences in the soil color and texture, dried vegetation and exposed, rounded rocks where there was water and aquatic life earlier in the year. Some plant and animal species thrive in the heat of the summer. Coyote Thistle, Woolly Marbles and Fitch’s Spikeweed can still be found in dry pools. Jackrabbits, White-tailed Kites and insects of all kinds bring motion to the prairie.
Splash encourages those who have shared their time, talent or treasure to stop by! Come meet Katie McCleary, Board Members, and Splash Staff who will be on hand to hear your reasons for supporting Splash’s mission. And of course, we’ll have some geeky fun, too! With microscopes to peer through, pans of aquatic critters to watch, and the cool resident critters of Critterville to interact with
